| This two-hour time exposure of Old Faithful (in Yellowstone National
Park, Wyoming) captures the world's best-known geyser erupting at night. This photo
contrasts the aqua color of the erupting water with the
circular arcs created by the stars. The trees, to
the left and right, frame Old Faithful and the star trails. The photo was taken between 1:00 AM and 3:00 AM after the setting of an almost
full moon. The camera was locked on a tripod and the shutter was opened before the first
and closed after the second eruption of Old Faithful. Polaris (the North Star) is near the
upper right third of the image; the stars "painted" their images onto the film
as the earth rotated in the two hours. The star Arcturus formed the brightest arc in the
image. |
