Testing the Waters
Testing the Waters

This portrait of an immature tri-colored (formerly called Louisiana) heron was taken near Flamingo, Everglades National Park, Florida. The bird can be identified as immature because the feathers below the throat are ruddy and are not completely white below the throat and along the neck. The animal was caught on film as it was stepping off the embankment into the water. The heron has the characteristic S-shaped curve to the neck. The image contrasts the extreme clarity of the boldly colored bird with the background of vegetation.
